Moving away from home can be a challenging experience for both students and their families. In the heat of the moment, it is common for students to forget items that they may need later. Although this is not an exhaustive list, here are some suggestions for what students may want to pack when they move to campus:

  • Posters/decorations for walls/pictures of family and friends
  • Microwave (<800 watts)
  • Power strips/multi-pronged surge protector/extension cords (size 16 or less; UL certified)
  • Carpet/area rug
  • Storage crates
  • Electronics/computer/laptop/phone and associated chargers
  • Small refrigerator (<5.5 cubic feet; can also be rented)
  • Alarm clock
  • Bed linens (extra long), blankets, pillows
  • Can opener
  • Clothes hangers
  • Desk lamp
  • Dishes, cups, and utensils
  • Fan
  • Laundry bag and detergent
  • Personal medications (prescription and non-prescription)
  • First aid kit
  • Toiletries
  • Hair styling/shaving items
  • Shower caddy and shower shoes
  • Towels and washcloths
  • Tissues and paper towels
  • Umbrella
  • Warm winter clothing (hats, mittens, snow boots, heavy coat, scarf) -- these can also be shipped at a later date if space is a concern
  • School supplies and book bag
  • Personal property insurance
  • Insurance card/medical information
  • Multiple identification documents for campus employment (such as a U.S. passport, a driver's license or state identification card, U.S. social security card, birth certificate, etc.)
