Parents & Family Weekend

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ about General Parents & Family Weekend Information

Q. How do you determine the Parents & Family Weekend date?

A. The Parents & Family Weekend date varies every year, depending on the home football schedule, Fall Break, and other events throughout the Fall Semester. Families have indicated to us that they want Parents & Family Weekend to be on a football Saturday. As a result, we have a limited number of fall weekends to select from. We do the best we can to arrange for a Big Ten game, but that is not always possible. Football ticket availability is limited to select games, and we select a game where we can get our desired number of football tickets from the Athletic Ticket Department that does not conflict with Homecoming, Fall Break, or major holidays. We are also not allowed to select the Michigan State game, the Ohio State game, or other select games with extremely high ticket demand.

Q. What is the best time to arrive in Ann Arbor?

A. We recommend that you arrive in Ann Arbor by Friday morning. Parents & Family Weekend check-in begins at 10:00 a.m. and some events begin that morning. The majority of the free events available to registered Parents & Family Weekend participants occur during the day on Friday. Families who arrive on Saturday, or late Friday night, typically regret not having arrived earlier because they miss out on many exciting activities.

Q. Will my student have classes on the Friday of Parents & Family Weekend?

A. Yes. The University does not cancel classes during Parents & Family Weekend. If your student normally has classes on Friday, then he or she will have classes on the Friday of Parents & Family Weekend. We still encourage you to arrive in town on Friday. There are many activities and events that you may want to participate in without your student.

Q. What are the parking options?

A. Parking will be very limited during Parents & Family Weekend, as it always is in Ann Arbor. We recommend using public transportation whenever possible. For additional details about parking during the football game, visit mgoblue.com.

Q. Is it appropriate to bring my student's sibling(s) to Parents & Family Weekend?

A. Siblings are welcome to attend Parents & Family Weekend activities, but keep in mind that most of the ticketed events will sell out. In particular, families are limited to four football tickets and therefore some family members may not be able to attend the football game. Events are intended for adults and college-aged students. As a result, teenage siblings may also enjoy the events, but younger siblings may not. We have indicated on the "Events" page which events are likely to be more interesting for younger siblings. In addition, Ann Arbor is a family-friendly town and there may be many events and activities of interest to younger children that are not affiliated with the Parents & Family Weekend program. The Ann Arbor Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has information for visitors of all ages.

Q. What can I bring into Michigan Stadium?

A. Due to security concerns, there are restrictions on what can be carried into the stadium. Prohibited items include bags of all kinds -- including purses, fanny packs, diaper bags -- coolers, containers, water bottles, and many other items. Click here for a complete list of permitted and prohibited items. You will be denied access to the stadium if you carry one of these items. Please read this list carefully before attending Parents & Family Weekend. MANY families have their day ruined by the security checkpoint at the Stadium because of their purses! Don't let this happen to you.

Q. When is Kickoff?

A. Kickoff will be determined 6-12 days prior to the event. Visit mgoblue.com for updates. Please be advised that if you are planning to attend the Michigan football game and an event Saturday evening, the evening event may begin before the football game ends.

Q. Where should I stay?

A. Hotel information is available on the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitors Bureau website at https://www.visitannarbor.org/media/newsarticle/parents-family-weekend . The Parents & Family Weekend Program is not responsible for making hotel reservations and cannot assist with any issues related to lack of room availability.

Q. My student is performing at the Pre-Game Tailgate, and I would like to watch him/her but not participate in the whole Tailgate. Do I still need to purchase a ticket to the Tailgate?

A.  Yes. All guests must have a ticket to attend the Pre-Game Tailgate. Be sure to order tickets to this event when you register for Parents & Family Weekend. You will be denied entrance to this event without a ticket.

Q. Do I have to purchase football tickets through the Parents & Family Weekend Program?

A. No. There are many ways to get football tickets. You may purchase tickets through the Athletic Ticket Office if they are available. You may also have connections through the Alumni Association, Hillel, University Development, or another department on campus. If you choose to purchase tickets through another source, you are responsible for finding out how to pick up the tickets. Tickets purchased through another department will NOT be available to pick up at the Parents & Family Weekend check-in location. The Parents & Family Weekend Program is not responsible for any tickets that you purchase through another department or organization.

Q. Where do I get my football tickets if I did not purchase them through the Parents & Family Weekend Program?

A. If you choose to purchase your football tickets through another department, it is your responsibility to find out how to pick up your tickets. Tickets purchased through another department will NOT be available to pick up at the Parents & Family Weekend check-in location. The Parents & Family Weekend Program is not responsible for any tickets that you purchase through another department or organization.

Q. Where in the stadium are the seats located?

A. The Parents & Family Weekend Program receives a block of tickets from the Athletic Ticket Department. Typically these tickets are located in the end zones. The tickets are not in the stadium's Student Section.

FAQ About the Registration Process

Q. Where can I find the Parents & Family Weekend ID number that is required to use the online registration form?

A. The Parents & Family Weekend ID number is a 9-digit number that will be randomly assigned to you. It is required to use the online registration form. The 9-digit Parents & Family Weekend ID number will be printed in the PINK box located on your printed invitation. In late August 2017, printed invitations will be mailed to the families of all full-time undergraduate students enrolled for the Fall 2017 term, including all incoming freshmen families. Printed invitations will be mailed to your student's permanent address listed in Wolverine Access. If your student does not have a permanent address listed in Wolverine Access, it will be sent to your student's current address. If you do not live at your student's permanent address, you will need to request that an invitation and Parents & Family Weekend ID number be mailed to you.

Q. When does registration begin?

A. Once Parents & Family Weekend registration dates are announced, you will be assigned a specific date and time to register. Your assigned registration date/time is the earliest that you may register, and you may register any time after your assigned time until the deadline. However, tickets are only available on a first-come, first-served basis. You may not register before your assigned date/time.

Q. Why do I have to wait for my assigned registration date/time to register?

A. The University of Michigan invites over 25,000 families to attend Parents & Family Weekend. Due to the high volume of interest, we cannot permit all families to register online at the same time, as it causes technical difficulties. Families will be randomly assigned a specific registration date and time. You may register on or after your assigned registration date/time, but not before.

Q. Where can I find out my assigned registration date/time?

A.  Your assigned date and time will be provided in the green box located on your printed Parents & Family Weekend invitation. Invitations will be mailed in late August 2017 to your student's permanent address listed in Wolverine Access. If your student does not have a permanent address listed on file, it will be sent to your student's current address. When you receive the invitation, do not throw it away! You will need to refer to the Parents & Family Weekend Identification Number and the Parents & Family Weekend Registration Appointment Date/Time that are indicated in the pink and green boxes, respectively. If you do not live at your student's permanent address, you will need to request that an invitation and Parents & Family Weekend ID number be mailed to you.

Q. What do I do if I don't live at my student's permanent address and wish to receive a Parents & Family Weekend ID number and registration date/time?

A. If you do not live at your U-M student's permanent address, but would like to receive a Parents & Family Weekend registration time/date and Parents & Family Weekend ID number, please email parentsweekend@umich.edu as soon as possible. You must include the following: Your student's name, your student's UMID number or birth date, your student's academic school/college (such as LSA, Engineering, Nursing, etc), as well as the mailing address to which you would like to have the invitation sent.

Q. Are divorced parents considered one family or two?

A. Divorced parents are considered two separate families. As a result, divorced parents will be assigned different registration appointment dates/times, must complete separate registration forms, pay separate registration fees, and are eligible for separate sets of football tickets. The parent who does not live at the student's permanent address must contact our office to be assigned a Parents & Family Weekend ID number and a registration date/time. If you do not live at your U-M student's permanent address, but would like to receive a Parents & Family Weekend registration time/date and Parents & Family Weekend ID number, please email parentsweekend@umich.edu. Q. What is the cancellation policy?

A. If you wish to cancel your entire Parents & Family Weekend registration, we must receive written confirmation of all cancellations by the cancellation deadline, which will be posted once it is determined. Those families who cancel before the deadline  will receive a refund for tickets purchased through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form, less the $50 non-refundable registration fee, 2-3 weeks after the request is received. Refunds will not be issued after the cancellation deadline  for ANY reason. Cancellation requests should be sent by email to parentsweekend@umich.edu. Cancellation requests cannot be made by phone. Note: Cancellations for tickets purchased directly through ticket vendors or organizations and not purchased through the Parents & Family Weekend online registration form cannot be refunded by the Parents & Family Weekend Program. Q. How can I make changes to my order?

A. Once you have submitted your order, you cannot make changes. If there are any unsold tickets, they will be for sale at the Parents & Family Weekend check-in on the Friday of Parents & Family Weekend. However, do not assume that that there will be additional tickets. Many events sell out in advance and tickets will not be available. To ensure that you get the tickets that you want, carefully read the "Events" page prior to registering to determine which events you would like to attend. Then, purchase those tickets using the online registration form. In addition, there will be a posting board at the Parents & Family Weekend check-in location for families to post tickets to sell and/or tickets to buy. We encourage you to utilize this board if you need to make changes to your order. You are responsible for posting ticket information on this posting board. The Parents & Family Weekend Program is not responsible for posting information on the parent-to-parent posting board.

Q. Should I buy tickets for my U-M student to attend Parents & Family Weekend activities?

A. Yes, we encourage you to attend events with your student. All ticketed events require tickets for each person attending, including the U-M student. Students are not admitted to the events without a ticket. Students can use their own ticket to the football game, if they have season tickets;  however, they will not be able to sit with you if you do not purchase them a ticket through the Parent and Family Weekend Program.

Q. If my ticket request cannot be filled, how will I be notified?

A. As you register online, the registration form will indicate if tickets for a particular event are sold out.

In addition, a posting board will be available for parents looking to buy or sell their tickets.
