We hope you enjoy your time in Ann Arbor. It will be a busy weekend and parking will be difficult, as it always is on a home football game weekend. The information below will help you make plans, and it is provided as a courtesy to those who are unfamiliar with navigating Ann Arbor on a game day. Allow yourself a significant amount of time and a lot of patience for travel and parking to all events during the weekend.

If you prefer to use public transportation, the Ann Arbor Convention and Visitors Bureau provides a list of taxi companies. The University of Michigan provides free bus service to all members of the University community, including family members, and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority provides bus service throughout the Ann Arbor area for reasonable fares.

Parking on Friday

On Friday, you will need to check-in at Michigan Union, 530 S. State St. to pick up your Parents & Family Weekend tickets and materials.

Parking Lots:

During business hours, we recommend parking in a public parking lot near campus. There are several visitor parking lots near the Michigan Union.

Thompson St. Surface Lot: Directly behind the Student Activities Bldg., this surface lot is near the Michigan Union. Look at the space number and then pay at the central pay machine before you leave the lot. The cost is $1.70/hour.*   Do not park in spaces marked “Blue Lot” or “UM Business/Service Vehicle Only.” Park only in spaces with a marked space number.

Maynard St. Parking Structure (324 Maynard St.): This large public structure is about 3 blocks away from the Michigan Union. The cost is $1.20/hour.*

Liberty Square Parking Structure (510 E. Washington St.): This structure, located on E. Washington St. between S. Division and S. State Streets, is about 4 blocks away from the Michigan Union. $3 flat rate entry fee after 3:00 p.m.*

Library Lane Underground Structure (319 S. Fifth Ave.): Located next to the Ann Arbor Library, the Library Lane Underground Structure is about 4 blocks from the Michigan Union. $1.20/hour.

Palmer Structure - Located on Palmer Drive located just west of Washtenaw Ave. This lot utilizes automated pay stations. The cost is $.85 per half hour.

Fourth & William Parking Structure (115 E. William St.): This structure is about 6 blocks away from the Michigan Union. The cost is $1.20/hour.*

Forest Street Parking Structure (650 S. Forest St.): This structure is about 5 blocks away from the Michigan Union. The cost is $1.20/hour.*

Parking Meters:

Parking meters provide convenience, but empty spaces are difficult to find, and you should be sure to pay close attention to parking time limits. Parking meters near the Michigan Union cost $1.90/hour.* Most are E-park meters. E-park machines accept coins, credit and debit cards. If you park at an E-park meter, remember the meter number then go to the nearest E-park payment machine. Follow the instructions on the E-park payment machine to pay for your parking meter.

*rates are subject to change.

Parking for Friday Night Events

After business hours, many faculty/staff structures open up for visitor parking. If the structure is near a performance venue, you can expect to pay a flat rate (cash only) to enter the structure. A complete list of faculty/staff parking structures is online. However, be sure to obey posted signs at the entrance of the structure indicating hours of enforcement for faculty/staff parking only.

Parking for Saturday's Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate

Parking on game day is a challenge. Please allow yourself a significant amount of time, and a good sense of humor, to plan for parking and travel to all events on a game day. A good pair of walking shoes is also valuable. If you are only attending the football game, and not the tailgate, we strongly encourage you to take the Football Shuttles provided by The Ride (see Football Game Parking Tab).

For parents who are attending the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate, there are several parking options, all of which are some distance away from the tailgate location at Ferry Field. The Dean of Students Office is not responsible for any parking arrangements.

Athletic Department Public Parking

The Athletic Department provides both "permit-only" and "day-of-game" parking options. "Permit-only" is for visitors who have purchased season parking permits through the Athletic Department. Most Parents & Family Weekend guests will be looking for "day-of-game" parking. A complete list of Athletic Department parking options is online.

Public Parking with Shuttles to Indoor Track Building

As a courtesy to guests attending the Parents & Family Tailgate, who may be unable to walk long distances from parking areas, the Dean of Students Office has arranged for shuttles from the Hill St. Parking Structure and the Thompson St. Parking Structure.

The Hill St. Parking Structure (located near 975 Hill St.) and the Thompson St. Parking Structure (located near 508 Thompson St.) cost $20 (cash only) to park, and are about 3/4 mile away from the Indoor Track Building. The structures open at 8:00 a.m. and spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no guarantee that spaces will be available in these parking structures. These structures are about 1 and 1/4 miles away from Michigan Stadium for your walk after the game.

A blue U-M bus will pick up at the structures and will drop off in front of Revelli Hall which is located in front of Ferry Field, prior to the Tailgate. Shuttles will make continuous loops, but due to the traffic, you may have to wait at the structures for 30 minutes or more, so if you do not have a mobility concern, we recommend walking instead.

The Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate time is to be determined. Shuttles to the Parents & Family Tailgate from the Hill St. and Thompson St. Parking Structures will begin at about four hours before kick-off and will loop continuously until about and hour before kick-off. Loops take approximately 25-45 minutes depending on traffic.

After the game, the blue U-M buses will take you back to the structures at Thompson St. and Hill St. The blue U-M buses will pick up on Stadium Way, on the south side of the Crisler Center (near Gate 2 of Michigan Stadium). Look for the blue buses that say “University of Michigan” along the side. The buses will make continuous loops back to the parking structures for 1 hour after the game has ended. If the weather is bad, these buses may be full, and you may have a long wait to get on a return-trip bus.

Football Game Parking

If you are attending both the football game and the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate, please see above for information about parking for the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate. If you are only attending the football game, we strongly recommend you take the Football Shuttles provided by The Ride (see below).

We strongly recommend that you take The Ride’s football shuttles to the football game if you are not attending the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate. The information below is provided for those who choose to ignore our advice.

If you do not take the shuttle, public parking that does not require a permit is limited, and you will need to navigate around area road closures and construction. The parking information provided here is for standard automobiles only. If you have an RV, please visit mgoblue.com for parking information. Parking must be paid in cash only.

Most parking areas near Michigan Stadium are permit only. To find a lot that is available for you without a permit, visit the Athletic Department Parking Inventory site and look for lots labeled "Day-of-Game/Cash Sales." Note that while some of these lots may be close to Michigan Stadium, they may be quite a distance away from the Indoor Track Building, where the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate is located. If you are planning to attend the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate, be sure to find a parking location that serves your needs for both the Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate location and the stadium. Some lots are “weather permitting.” We recommend listening to one of the following radio stations for updates on Game Day weather and parking information: WAAM (1600 AM), WJR (760 AM), WTKA (1050 AM) and WWJ (950 AM).

Parking spaces in these Day of Game/Cash Sale lots are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and may fill up hours before game time. A map of most of the lots can be downloaded from the Athletic Department website. Please Note: This map includes public parking as well as pre-purchased permit-only areas. Only the lots listed in the online chart that are marked “Day of Game/Cash Sale Parking” for the general public, and not all lots are shown on this Athletic Department map.

In addition to the lots listed through the Athletic Department, Ann Arbor residents, local businesses, and organizations will also sell parking spaces in their driveways, lawns, and parking lots. Prices vary. Cars may be “blocked in” at these locations, so you should be willing to accept this risk if you choose this option. Watch for signs, and only park in spaces clearly marked “Football Parking.” Illegally parked cars will be ticketed or towed.

Parking for Saturday & Sunday Events

Parking for Friday & Saturday Evening, or Sunday Events   If you are attending any of the Friday or Saturday evening Parents & Family Weekend activities and events on Central Campus, you may park in any designated visitors’ structures/lots, as well as the University parking structures on Thayer St. or Fletcher St. While these structures are normally reserved for University staff only, during performances at the University’s theaters, these structures are usually open for public parking (for a fee).   On Sunday, parking meters and some University parking structures and lots are free and open to the public. You may also park in any of the designated vistors’ structures/lots. Refer to a campus map for a complete listing.

Football Shuttles

Only attending the football game on Saturday? The Ride Football Shuttles are the low-cost, headache-free way to travel!

If you are not attending the Parents & Family Weekend Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate, we strongly encourage you to use The Ride Football Shuttle to get to the game. The Ride shuttles serve many locations, including most Ann Arbor hotels. You can leave your car at your hotel or one of several central locations, and ride to and from the football game without the hassle of game traffic, parking, and road closures. The Football Ride runs approximately every 20 minutes beginning two hours before game time with the last shuttles leaving 30 minutes before game time. Shuttles run approximately one hour after the game. Shuttles operate in the North, South, East, West and Downtown areas of the Ann Arbor.

Tickets are $3.00 round trip, or $1.50 one way, and are sold at participating hotels or may be purchased in advance by mail or in person at The Ride’s main office (2700 S. Industrial Hwy.) Passengers are encouraged to purchase round trip tickets, as drivers do not carry change. The Ride buses drop you off at the stadium. The Ride buses are white and often have advertisements painted on them.

See above for information about Parents & Family Weekend Tailgate parking.

The Ride Football Shuttle Pick-Up Locations

The Ride Football shuttle serves the hotels and parking lots listed below (hotel parking areas are designated for use by hotel guests only; inquire at your hotel front desk for shuttle pick up location). Hotels listed with an asterisk are shuttle ticket sales locations. If you are not staying in one of these hotels, we recommend that you park at one of the Park & Ride lots, where parking is free. But, be sure to purchase your shuttle ticket in advance (either by mail or in person at the main office, or at one of the participating hotel locations).
